Sister-in-law insists party host is "cold and selfish" for giving her 6-year-old daughter gluten-free food: 'The world doesn't revolve around Claire's allergies'

This parent is wondering if a birthday party menu was handled in the right way, since their sister-in-law was upset by the food provided. 

At some point in your life, you will be offered gluten-free food, and if you choose to eat it, you will probably not like it. It's a medical necessity for some people… but even they'll tell you how unpleasant it is to munch on a slice of the world's driest, crumbliest gluten-free bread. Like sure, it's bread… but at what cost? 

In comparison, vegan food is pretty fantastic these days. It used to get mocked for being subpar, but not today. Chefs and food companies have made incredible strides with the stylings of vegan and vegetarian offerings in the last decade or so. Even those who've historically turn their noses up at that cuisine end up loving it! 

This gives me a lot of hope for the gluten-free folks of the world. Just because y'all's food is the currently the driest crumbs imaginable, the most tasteless of tastes out there, doesn't mean it'll be like that forever. Let's check back in in 2040 or so, and see how we stand. 

This person really thought that all of the food bases were covered when it came to organizing a party for an 8-year-old. The birthday girl's niece had a whole buffet's worth of gluten-free food! I think the host really went out of their way to accommodate the child's gluten allergy, as well as allergies to other foods. 

It isn't always easy to find that gluten-free stuff, either. Sometimes you have to search around multiple stores, or you have to order this stuff online and hope it arrives in time for your event. You have to consider every little ingredient, putting immense amounts of your own time and effort into creating a safe environment for your loved one to eat in. If you have a gluten-free family member, or one with allergies to common ingredients, you probably know just how detail-oriented this struggle is. Even if you scoop a piece of gluten-free cake with a cake spatula that was used on a regular cake, that piece could now be contaminated. It's a game of constant vigilance! 

Unfortunately, this kid was upset by the food choices, but not due to a lack of effort, but because she'd rather be eating Chick-fil-A and pizza like the other guests. Just the smell alone must've been tantalizing! At 6 years old, you can't expect a child to fully understand why, through no fault of their own, they can't eat like everybody else. Life is unfair, but no 6-year-old wants to hear that.
